Course contents :

The course "Learning the Speech Therapy Approach" is a clinical course using problem based learning methods, centered on contextualized acquisition and focused on the learner. The LSTA course is an adaptation of these concepts to the specific context of Speech Therapy. Its aim is to develop students' ability in the area of clinical reasoning using general problem solving strategies, and to develop a network linking organized knowledge and specific abilities. Students will be working in small groups on clinical cases that involve the solution of a problem. With the help of a clinician acting as a tutor, they will work on specific problems together, in terms of the following steps: analysis of the case, generating a hypothesis, commenting on complementary data or documentation, assessment of all information collected regarding the case, and finally, the solution of the problem.

Learning outcomes of the course :

Four categories of skills are identified: Dynamic skills

To increase the students' motivation in relation to the practice of their profession, first in training courses, then during their future professional practice.
To stimulate students' desire to learn, to seek answers and to discover knowledge.

Strategic skills:

To increase problem-solving skills
To be able to acknowledge their strengths and weaknesses
To be aware of the complexity of professional practice
To allow each one to develop their capacities for critical thinking, independent action, and analysis
To allow each one to develop teamwork skills.
To facilitate cooperation between students and clinicians

Research Skills:

to help the students develop information gathering strategies
to teach them how to understand the important part of a book, article, test or any material presented, in a limited time

Specific Skills :

To develop skills regarding diagnosis and treatment of oral and written language disorders and problems regarding mathematical and calculating ability.

Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :

PSYC2142-1. Language development LOGO1150-1 Assessment of oral language LOGO1151-1 Assessment of written language LOGO0008-1. Complaints regarding spoken language, and speech reeducation LOGO0009-1. Acquisition of written language, complaints regarding written language and reeducation.
Familiarity with tests included in the limited list of INAMI tests

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :

In-person instruction. Classeswill meet on Friday, 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Attendance in class is required. Students have only one permitted absence per year (no excuse required). For any subsequent absence, students will have to turn in a written assignment on the topic covered in class on the days they were absent. Working together in a group: throughout the course, students will work together to perfect material concerned with language re-education.
