Course contents :  
The course begins with an introduction to the historical and sociological background to Caribbean literature. After this brief overview, the rest of the course will be devoted to the discussion of selected poems, short stories and novels which address the different facets of the notion of madness and call into question the conventional perception of mental illness.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
At the end of the course, students are expected to master the main theoretical notions pertaining to the study of madness in Caribbean literature. They will be able to use these notions in the textual analysis of works from this literary tradition. More generally, they will also have learned how to read any literary discourse dealing with mental illness and will have improved their overall critical skills.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
Good knowledge of English.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :  
Second term, 2 hours a week. The course involves seminar discussions and the active participation of students. The course this year will be combined with an international symposium involving critics and writers discussed in class. Recommended or required readings :  
Poems, short stories and a few essays will be available at the beginning of the course. Four (short) novels to be discussed in class:
  • Jean Rhys, Wide Sargasso Sea (London: Penguin)
  • Erna Brodber, Myal (London: New Beacon)
  • Caryl Phillips, Cambridge (London: Vintage)
  • David Chariandy, Soucouyant (Vancouver: Arsenal Pulp Press)
Assessment methods and criteria :  
Written research essay which will be discussed during an oral examination.
