Course contents :  
The author to be read in this biennial class (odd years) can vary each time. During the academic year 2013-2014 Basil of Caesarea's Address to young men on the study of classical literature will be read, explained, translated and commented on. For MA 1 students, there will also be a personal work on intertextuality, whereas MA 2 students will have private reading of Plutarchus.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
Linguistic training, illustrating the main literary genres as well as Greek civilisation and stimulating the reading of Greek authors.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
Very good knowledge of Ancient Greek.

Personal preparation is required each week.

Text edition: Fernand Boulenger (CUF, 1935), in free access at the library and on eCampus. This Paris edition has been reedited without critical apparatus in: Basile de Césarée, Aux jeunes gens. Comment tirer profit de la littérature grecque, texte établi par Fernand Boulenger, introduction, traduction et notes par Arnaud Perrot, Paris, Les Belles Lettres, coll. « Classiques en poche », 2012. Parallel texts are being put at your disposal on eCampus. No syllabus. For MA 2 students: Plutarque, Œuvres morales, tome I, 2e partie, éd. Robert Klaerr - André Philippon - Jean Sirinelli (CUF 1989).
Assessment methods and criteria :  
Oral exam on Basil. MA 1: paper on intertextuality. MA 2: oral exam on the private reading.
