Concept of nature

-Presentation of the historical character of the concept of nature
- Ancient and mediaeval conception of nature linked to contemplative science and handcrafted technique
-Modern conception of nature linked to experimental science and technology

-Romantic criticism of the modern conception of nature: appearence of a pantheistic conception of nature

-Sketch of a contemporary conception of nature as a synthesis of objectivity and subjectivity, as an integration of the observer to the experience itself of nature
-Observation of the impact of these conceptions on the landscape itself

History of art : gardens and landscapes

Overview of the history of gardens from Antiquity to the present day, with particular focus upon the periods and/or places associated with the birth of a style or a way of composition, in particular: - Roman Antiquity (the imperial villa - the villa rustica) - the Middle Ages (the enclosed garden, the Jardin d'Amour) - the Renaissance (antique and mannerist gardens) - the Baroque era (French gardens in France and through Europe). Development of different related themes, in particular: - the relationship between architecture and garden; - methods of transmitting knowledge (technical, horticultural and botanical) through botanical works (herboriums, anthologies), gardening treaties, literary texts and techniques, iconographic representations; - showcasing creative personalities (practicians and theorists); - the content of treaties and other theoretical writings, the role and transmitting of models. Landscape aesthetics

The course clarifies the different notions of aesthetics: study of art and study of sensitivity.
It develops a phenomenology of the sensitive approach of landscape in conjunction with the diffferent senses:
-Attention to openings in close connection with breathing (Air)
-Analyse of rhythms in close relation with hearing (Water)
-Approach of grain and textures in close relation with touching (Earth)
-Observation of colour and light in close relation with seeing ( Fire)
These different sections focus on a joint and multisensory approach of the sensitive landscape. The course emphazises that the landscape architect 's attitude towards projects is necessarily based on a prior responsiveness to the site.

Learning outcomes of the course :  
Concept of nature

- To present and analyse the historical character of the concept of nature
- To show how scientific research and the practical actions of men are part of a conception of the world and of nature

- To question some naive evidence in our current understanding of what nature is

History of art : gardens and landscapes

Be able to master specific, typological and technical vocabulary (see: Glossary). Be able to manage historical data allowing gardens to be situated in their stylistic and sociological contexts. Know different styles and their constitutive elements, through theoretical work and treaties on contemporary composition as well as their transmission according to era, country and/or region. Take into consideration the contribution of major creators. Master bibliographical and iconographical sources in relation with major styles and models of composition, and the creators.

Landscape aesthetics

The course leads to distinguish artistic aesthetics and sensitive aesthetics.
It aims to provide conceptual tools for sensitive landscape analysis.
It intends to develop the landscape sensitivity of studends.

Oral examination: - Oral presentation of a written work reporting the ideas of one of the studied philosophers. relationship of these ideas to landscape architecture.
Evaluation criteria: - Comprehension of the concepts studied in class
- Ability to do personal research - Ability to synthesize readings and make connections with the course as well as the practice of the landscapearchitect

Oral or written examination (depending on the number of students).

Landscape aesthetics

Oral examination: - Knowledge and comprehension of course content - Oral presentation of a personal essay of a sensitive analysis of a site chosen by the student, based on concepts presented in class.
Evaluation criteria: -Memorisation and comprehension of the concepts studied in class -Judicious and personal appropriation of these concepts
