Course contents :
 |
| - Translation of different types of documents : specialized publications, excerpts from short-stories, novels, essays, cartoons, or from audio-visual sources;
- Translation of different culturel texts as well as chosen documents from anthropological and social sciences specialized publications;
- Comparative analysis of original documents and their translations into French;
- Introduction to audio-visuel subtitling;
- Introduction to the concepts of adapation and localization. |

Learning outcomes of the course :

| At the end of the course, the students will be able to :
- draw on the necessary resources and search for relevant documents necessary to have a full and complete understanding of the source document;
- activate specific strategies and knowledge in the framework of a "specialized language";
- apply strategies discussed and tested throughout the year; therefore, define and comment on their methodology;
- justify their choices on the basis of relevant criteria. |

Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :

| Having been trained to the translation of general interest texts. |
 |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
 |
| Reading/translation packs on chosen specific subjects; each pack concentrates on specific 'problems' likely to arise in the translation process.
The students proceed to the translations at home and carry out complementary research on the strategies to apply. The teaching activities are complementary to the expected learning outcomes.
In the second half of the year, the students will have to hand in a portfolio, in which they will show their capacity to deal with specific difficulties, to decide on strategies and relevant choices according to their source document. |

| Two hours per week courses given at HEL. |

| Translation packs handed out when needed at the different sessions. |

Assessment methods and criteria :
 |
| - The students carry out the assignements at home (translation and complementary resarch) = continuous assessment : 10 %
- The students hand in a portfolio (specific assignements, assessment sheet and deadline will be communicated later on) : 40 %
- Final exam in June : 50 %. |
