Course contents :  
Translating general interest texts presenting different levels of language, different registers and covering a range of topics. Strengthening knowledge of contrastive linguistics. Strengthening knowledge of problems of both translation and maintaining the style and register of the source text. Development of French-language drafting skills.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
By the end of the course, students will be able to translate general interest texts, i.e. analyse, retain and reword meaning. Students will also be able to comment on translation difficulties encountered and justify their choices. Students will be able to use basic translation tools (mono-lingual and bilingual dictionaries) as well as to carry out research with the aid of specialised dictionaries or IT tools (Internet). This includes students carrying out translations while taking into account linguistic and stylistic particularities of the source and target languages.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
Solid operational knowledge of the Dutch language. Excellent command of the target language.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
Method of teaching: written preparation of the translations at home. Comparison and critical group correction of the work prepared individually. Elaboration of a final joint version.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :  
Teaching method:
Reading texts and written preparation for translations at home. Group comparison and critical correction of individually prepared translations. Development of a final shared version. Short individual translation exercises without a translation dictionary, and group correction.

Organisation: Two hours of classes per week in the first and second terms.
Compulsory course given at the Haute Ecole in Liège.
