| As the course is common to several sections of various faculties (Institute of Social Sciences, Institute of Public Health, Faculty of Psychology), an attention is granted to the diversity of the school and professional courses, but also to the waitings of students.
It thus tends to link at the same time theoretical topics (the large sociological theories which had an interest for the ageing-related themes) and concrete problems (mistreatment, dependence, active ageing, etc.)
Concretely, the course aims at sweeping the field of the sociology of ageing. The topics learned during the first part are the following ones:
- Intro: stereotypes on ageing
- old age through the ages
- large sociological currents (functionalism, phenomenology, interactionnism)
- the glance of the modern theories on the principal steps of ageing (retirement, widowhood, institutionalization)
- the typical case of the quantitative studies
- active ageing
- dependence
- mistreatment |

| The overall objective of the course is to deconstruct some stereotypes associated with the concept of aging (normal and pathologic aging). More concretely, various problems related to or associated with aging (normal and pathologic aging) are considered, as: (1) the origins and characteristics of the aging population (demographics), (2) physiological aging, (3) the questioning of psychometric model of cognitive decline, (4) the description of some theories explaining how a person adapts to his aging and maintains a good quality of life, and (5) how to take care of a person having an Alzheimer's disease. |

| The course envisages the protection of old people under two juridical points of view : the perspective of the rights of personnality, and the one of patrimony rights.
In the first perspective, will be studied, among others, patient's rights, euthanasia, protection by different status of incapacity and the survivance of the right of personnality after the death of the person.
In the second perspective, will be studied the problem of alimony between the old people and their families, the regime of inheritance rights, and matrimonial property. |

| At the end of the course, the student will be able to remember and will have understood the main sociological and theoretical concepts met.
Especially, he will have acquired a critical glance on notions such as the dependence of elderly people, the older workers, the representations of old age...
He will be able to argue on these topics. |

| to have some theoritical and methodological knowledges in connection with the present knowledges about ageing; knowledges being particularly important for the nursing staff or future directors of institution for the elderly. |

| The course's objective is to make the student acquainted with the juridical tough and to give him a basic knowledge of core concepts and principles of the law, related to his professional practise. |

| Several documents (articles, extracts of books, ...) will be given. Those are analysed and commented during oral courses.
All the published codes or their photocopies are allowed. |

Assessment methods and criteria :

| Oral examination. Written documents (powerpoints) as well as notions developed during the oral course are part of the examination.
The students are evaluated on their restitution and their comprehension of the course, but also on their capacity to put in prospect the concepts seen, to bring personal examples, or a critical glance. |

| Oral or written assesment
If written, the question is presented as a casus, and students are asked to apply the concepts studied in a practical tough process.
