Course contents :  
The following themes are developed : - the main theories of urban geography - the issue of urban sprawl - the spatial structure and functioning of urban neighborhoods
Learning outcomes of the course :  
In the domain of general geography
The first objective of the course is to provide the theoretical knowledges of urban geography. The objective of the course is also to learn how to use those knowledges in order to improve their competencies in the analysis of the main urban issues and the main problems cities exhibits (planning, development, segregation...).  To analyze the main urban issues and the main problems cities exhibits must be related to the citizen awareness of the students.    In the domain of regional geography   The course also aims to develop the competence of the students to comprehend the spatial structure and functioning of urban neighborhoods.  The proposed exercise on the spatial organization of urban areas aims to develop the autonomy of students
 
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
"Introduction to social and economic geography" (Bac 1)  "Introduction to economic geography" (Bac 2)  "Population geography" (Bac 2)  "Location of economic activities" (Bac 3)  "Cultural and political geography" (Bac 3)  Passive knowledge of English
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
Lectures with the professor (mixt of presentations and exchanges) on both, the main theories of urban geography and the issue of urban sprawl.
Team work and field visits on the spatial structure and functioning of urban neighborhoods. Students present their works on urban neighborhoods in a written report and during the field visits.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :  
Class room training sessions : 5 theoretical courses. Team working supervised by a teaching assistant : 15h. Two days of field visits dedicated to different Liege neighborhoods.
Recommended or required readings :  
Slide presentations, bibliography, scientific articles and various illustrations available on MyULg.
Assessment methods and criteria :  
Oral exam on the lectures (with a 20 minutes written preparation) = 65 % of the quotation. Personal work on the basis of a written report and an oral presentation during the field visits in Metz (presentation of the neighborhoods) = 25 % of the quotation. Personal work on the basis of a an oral presentation during the field visits in Metz (presentation of the agglomeration structure = 10 % of the quotation.
