Course contents :  
- After a theoretical reminder in organic chemistry, students will present the group project they will complete. They will consider the preparation of a molecule (or class of molecules) having high added value by chemical synthesis, semisynthesis or biosynthesis.
- Distance and face-to-face interactions between students and supervisors will prepare the work the students will carry out in the laboratory.
- The students will design the synthesis, semi-synthesis or biosynthesis procedure of the target compound with one or more key steps performed in the laboratory.
- At the end of the lab, students will verify the identity and purity of the target molecules by the appropriate spectrometric technique.
- They will then write a critical report in English considering different aspects of the synthesis they conducted (yield, purity, cost, environmental impact), and propose approaches to improve the process.
- They will present a seminar in English to the class.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
At the end of the course, the students will be able to:

- Identify the different routes of synthesis and biosynthesis of a target molecule
- Complete this synthesis or part of it in the laboratory
- Verify the identity and purity of the product obtained by the appropriate method
- Write a critical report on the synthesis studied considering different perspectives
- Present orally a summary of their work in English
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
Organic Chemistry – Bachelor in bioengineering, 2nd year (CHIM9255 -3)
Theoretical and physical chemistry applied to structural analysis of biomolecules (BIOL2019 -1)
