Fibrous and globular proteins; I.7. Protein folding. Chapter II. Basic concepts in Enzymology: II.1. General properties of enzymes; II.2. Enzyme kinetics : steady-state - independent binding sites; II.3. Enzyme inhibition; II.4. Catalytic strategies. Chapter III. Biological membranes: III.1. Membrane lipids; III.2. Lipid bilayers; III.3. Membrane proteins; III.4. Structure of membrane proteins. Chapter IV. Nucleic acid and the flow of genetic information: IV.1. Nucleotides; IV.2. DNA structure; IV.3. DNA replication; IV.4. Gene expression. Chapter V. Metabolism: V.1. Glycolysis and gluconeogenesis; V.2. Krebs cycle; V.3 Oxidative phosphorylation; V.4. Photosynthesis
Learning outcomes of the course :  
The aim of these lectures is to teach students with fundamentals in biochemistry, i.e. 1) the structure of biological (macro)molecules, namely proteins, nucleic acids, lipids and carbohydrates; 2) their organization and function; 3) their metabolism. Emphasis will be given on the application of basic chemical principles in the life sciences.

30 hours of lectures, given with the help of powerpoint presentations, blackboard and white chalk

Assessment methods and criteria :  
A mixed oral and written exam will be organized. The oral part is for ca. 30 min, with maximum 15 min of preparation and thus minimum15 min of discussion. For the written part (30 min) the student will have to solve a problem, as discussed for the lectures
