Course contents :  
The theme of the academic year 2013-2014 will be social housing seen from an historical perspective. In different groups, students will be asked to construct a critical approach to research by studying a social housing area which is emblematic of urban thought: city-gardens, collective urban dwellings in the 1920s, CIAM-style housing.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
This optional course aims to build a critical approach to research by taking an in-depth look at the theme of urban history: the aim is to understand the genesis of an area, its 'idelogical' inspiration, its evolution and its current situation. The general aim is to learn to decipher and decode the contemporary urban landscape using historical tools. Particular attention is given to the reflective component: elaboration and verification of hypotheses, continuous assessment of the progress of work, developing avenues for research.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
The course is divided into different sequences: theoretical and historical presentations, assessing sites, sessions examining different documentary resources with a view to their optimal use, production of a presentation and a written piece of work.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :  
Presence in class is compulsory.

A syllabus is provided, containing: - Historical analyses of the subject
- Scientific texts
- Background information to follow the presentations
- Recommendations and information on how the class will take place and on grades
- A bibliography
Assessment methods and criteria :  
Presentations and group work will be assessed based on the following criteria: Adopting an historical perspective, Explaining the approach, Definition of avenues for research, Using documentary resources, Presentation, Interview report. Part of the grade is individual and relates to the critical appreciation of an historical urban document
