Course contents :
The teaching method course for social sciences (part 1) is organized around sequences of work during the course of which the students are required to design lesson sequences focusing on set themes (political organization in federal Belgium; Belgian electoral procedure; judicial organization, courts and tribunals). Individual experiments will be systematically used in order to tease out the principles of planning and organization of learning in class.
The lecturers will also shake up school practices and proceed with a methodical deconstruction of initial representations of the teaching profession.
Individual experiments will be completed by a first course (with a duration of 4 to 6 hours of teaching in class).
By the end of the experimentation approach, each student will be requested to write a preparation schedule for a sequence of lessons as well as a reflexive report on the personal contribution of the first part of the training.
Learning outcomes of the course :
By the end of the different individual experiments and their collective analysis, from the first class and the analysis of how it was conducted, the student must be capable of writing a document summarizing the essential principles  involved in the preparation of a sequence of lessons; to write a written report devoted to a retrospective and reflective analysis of his or her teaching practices (learning approaches and management of incidents occurring in class); to argue for the positions and suggestions mentioned in these two reports; to keep an account of remarks, advice and guidelines formulated by the lecturers; to take a reflective stance with regard to his or her practice and initial representations with regard to the teaching profession.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Proficiency in the French language.
Mastery of the disciplinary content relative to the subjects in the social sciences programme (secondary teaching).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Micro-sequences during teaching method sessions for social sciences: individual experiments, use of these experiments during a group debriefing session and from a written feedback given at the start of the session (a document entitled "elements for a reflective practice").
A practical course in a class (secondary teaching, general, technical or professional).
Individual interviews ("reflective practices").
No supervised course. Learning will be of the "learning by doing" and "problem-based learning" type.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Obligatory presence at the work sessions (Wednesday afternoons).
Recommended or required readings :
No course notes.
The administrative and legal data can be obtained by consulting the following internet sites: www.restode.cfwb.be, www.enseignement.be, www.segec.be, www.cpeons.be.
This data (including the study programmes) will not be dealt with in the context of the teaching mehod course for social sciences.
Assessment methods and criteria :
The performance of the students will be assessed based on an overall mark of 80 marks composed as follows:
(1)    Presence at class sessions (10 marks).
(2)    The completion of a written lesson on an subject that is set during teaching method courses for social sciences. After the presentation of the lesson, he or she may meet one of the members of the teaching team in order to make the necessary corrections. The lesson will be corrected. The corrected lesson will be assessed taking account of exactness and precision of content (20 marks).
(3)    A first course covering a period of 4 to 6 hours. The following factors will be taken into consideration during the summative assessment of the first course: (1) the attitude in relation to function (ethical and deontological aspects); (2) mastery of content with the level and needs of students. The other aspects of the performance will be the subject of a formative assessment. The course will be assessed by the teaching team for special teaching method after consultation with the course head. In case of serious insufficiency with regard to the ethical and deontological aspects, the performance of the student will be sanctioned by serious insufficiency in part 1. In this case, a brief report will be written and submitted to the student. An important place will be devoted to critical reflection during the first experiments. Participation in an individual meeting pedagogical monitoring ets mandatory after the first course (10 marks).

(4)    The completion of a preparation table for a series of lessons. Based on the observations made and suggestions in the context of the sessions devoted to the presentation of the set lessons, each student will write a preparation guideline for a sequence of lessons covering what he or she considers to be the main elements and presented in chronological order (20 marks).
(5)    Reflective practices; the following factors will be subject to assessment: (1) the effective presence (absence will be penalized); (2) the ability to integrate the observations and advice formulated, to adopt a critical attitude with regard to his or her performance and accept to deconstruct his or her initial representations. This ability to integrate the observations and advice will be assessed in a personal summarizing report covering the exchanges between the individual and the teaching team. This personal report will cover what is proposed in the training suggested in the context of the teaching method course for social sciences (part 1) and is seen by the student to be indispensable to the practice of the teacher of social sciences and what has particularly "shaken up" his or her ideas (40 marks).
The inability to integrate the observations and formulated advice can result in a seriously insufficient overall mark. In case of major difficulties encountered by the student the teaching team will suggest an individual approach to the content of the course Didactics of the social sciences.
Work placement(s) :
A course in class lasting 4 to 6 hours organized during the period fixed by the CIFEN.
Organizational remarks :
The teaching method sessions in social sciences (part 1 and 2) are organized in the St Veronique college, rue Rennequin Sualem in Liege.
