| Teaching in the first semester, review in January |
Course contents :

Learning outcomes of the course :
| Because the media shapes public opinion, has an impact on our view of the world and has a role to play in the construction of identity, teachers have to contribute, regardless of the subject matter they are teaching, to creating responsible citizens, active spectators who are conscious of the process of how media-related messages are constructed; capable of distinguishing the mechanisms of representation and of defining the challenges they pose.
The course will not, however, present a series of "pedagogical recipes" applicable wholesale to higher secondary education. Rather, it will set out the possible paths which can stimulate a desire to learn about and with the media and how to teach them using a methodology constructed by teachers themselves and in line with their own objectives and interests. |

Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
| |
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
| The course will be divided into 6 sessions, each addressing a particular type of media. Most theoretical ideas will be developed from the analysis of media documents requiring students' active participation. Attendance in class is therefore highly recommended.
The class will take place on Wednesdays from 6pm to 8pm in the GOTHOT Room (Place du 20 Août, Building A1). |
Recommended or required readings :
| - Syllabus (available from wednesday, september 24th on MyULg).
- Students are also requested to deepen their understanding by consulting the bibliography provided at the end of the syllabus.
- The ppt presentations will be available online (MyULg) after each session.
- The day before each session, a general plan of the session will be available online (MyULg). Students are requested to print this page out before each session. |
Assessment methods and criteria :
| Students are assessed on their knowledge of the key notions and concepts presented in class, and their ability to use them in order to develop a critical analysis of a media document - i.e. on their ability to deconstruct the media document so as to understand its mechanisms (production, diffusion, reception).
The 2 hours written exam will take place in January 2015. |
Work placement(s) :
| |
Organizational remarks :
| Students are requested to regularly consult the Cifen website (www.cifen.ulg.ac.be) as well as the notice boards (Place du 20 Août, Building A1, Second floor) for any additional information given during the year. |
