REMM0001-1  Remedial course in mathematics

Duration :  44h REM
Number of credits :
Bachelor in medicine, 1st year1
Lecturer :  Pierre Mathonet
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Organisation and examination :
Teaching in the second semester
Course contents :
This series of lecturesis intended for the students of the first year in medicine who follow the program Q2FRA.
The contents consist therefore in a review the mathematical tools and concepts that the students have learned in secondary school (and a few aditional ones) and that will be useful to follow the usual course in medicine.
More precisely, the course will cover the following topics (among others)
1) Elementary logic and naive set theory.
2) Handling simple algebraic expressions.
3) Solving equations of the first and second degree and linear systems of equations. Solving related problems, proportional quantities.
4) Elements of vector and analytic plane geometry (straight lines, circles and their equations, parallel lines perpendcular lines), afew word about the angles.
5) Some concepts of analytic geometry in three dimensions, including the inner and cross products.
6) Elementary trigonometry : definition of trigonometric numbers and particular values, trigonometry in rectangle triangles, and also generalizations in arbitrary triangles.
7) Introduction to function, including a review of famous particular (sets of) functions(affine and quadratic functions, polynomials, rational fractions, logarithms, exponentials, integer or fractional powers) 8) Limits of functions at a point or at infinity. 9) Elementary differentiation theory : derivatives and their common use. 10) Introduction to integral calculus
Learning outcomes of the course :
At the end of the lectures, the students should have learned the mathematical tools that are necessary for the other lectures in the first year of studies in medicine.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
The learning activities are threefold.
In a first step, the theory is recalled and examples of exercises are delivered in face-to-face.
A list of exercises will be proposed to the students who are asked to solve them at home.
These exercises are then solved in a third step.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
This is mostly a face-to-face mode of delivery.
Recommended or required readings :
Assessment methods and criteria :
The final evaluation will be based on an exam, which can have the form of multiple choice questions, but not excusively.
The exam is mainly about problem solving, but a small part (between 10 and 20 percent) will be about theory.
The teacher can also take into account some evaluations that will be hedl during the lessons and will be announced in due time.
A preliminary test might be organized, upon acceptance by the "conseil des études"
