Course contents :  
The course will be centered on the analysis of the school failure, and in particular on the grade repetition issue. Mechanisms which contribute to school failure and its individual and social consequences will be analyzed. Among mechanisms generating school failure, the focus will be put on education system and pedagogical factors, by opposition to the individual factors. The international comparison will help to understand better the situation in Federation Wallonia-Brussels.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
At the end the course, the students will have to be able
1. To investigate an educational issue having individual and collective incidences:

- by referring to the theories of the education sciences - by basing itself on various methodologies and scientific tools - by basing itself on a diversity of educational contexts 2. To analyze the stakes and the societal effects of educational practices 3. To interpret research results such as they are presented in scientific studies

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
Oral presentations supported by power points. Sessions of self-assessment in plenary session are planned.

Required reading: Crahay, M. (2003). Peut-on lutter contre l'échec scolaire. Bruxelles: De Boeck.
Power points will be available from MyULg.
Assessment methods and criteria :  
The assessement is based on - the content taught during the oral presentations; - the corresponding power points; - Marcel Crahay's book. A bank of items will be available from MyULg. A part of the items of the written examination will arise from this bank. The assessment will be a written examamination: Multiple Choice Questionnaire (True/False format). An oral assessment may be envisaged in 3rd session for Bac 1 students.
