Teaching in the first semester, review in January
Course contents :
Training early childhood professionals to develop skills which are both specific to the field and cross-cutting to education and training. It concerns both those who are likely to be involved in this specific field (educational advisor, trainer, coordinator, mentor to professionals in the field of early childhood) as well as others affected by the challenges of professionalisation in the field of education.
This course offers a critical view of the dynamics and current challenges in the field of initial training in the field of education in early childhood in the Brussels-Wallonia Federation and in Europe. It asks whether the professional nature of an activity is often mixed with a exclusively female 'mothering', by positioning the problem in its historical and political-administrative context. It studies the challenges of professionalising this sector by specifically targeting the training questions.
Learning outcomes of the course :
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
  • identify the main challenges of professionalisation in the sector and the variety of methods established for achieving this on a European level,
  • observe educational situations (meals, playtime, nappy time) in ECEC services and discuss them with practioners,
  • analyse training situations in terms of the aims of professionalisation.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Course of "questions and practice in early childhood education"
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Students will lead interviews by practioners in order to identify the required competences in the field. The lecturer will sustain a debate in regard with the most accurate results of research.
In groups, students will analyze an initial training system set in another country that has been recognized on the international level. They present it to their peers. The lecturer will propose a file containing articles related to the chosen context.
Either individually or in pairs, the students will get in touch with a team of a ECEC service in order to get to know about observation of educational practice in daily situations. The lecturer will provide a list of teams and later prepare and analyze observations with the group of students.
Either individually or in pairs, students will contact a training operator (if possible registered and subsidised by the "Office de la Naissance et de l'Enfance"). The lecturer will provide a list of contact details, as well as a presentation letter.
Based on the analysis of documents gathered and a recorded interview led at the trainer's place, the student will identify the logic of training (planned objectives, values, principles of action, approaches and training methods and individual support, evaluation methods planned, etc.). He will identify the elements likely to contribute to professionalization.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
  • seminars led by the trainer,
  • team works
  • reading and analysis of articles and reference or training documents
  • non participative observation on the field and interview of practitionners
Connected to observations on the field and seminars, the students will have the possibility to discover an exhibition on ECEC services in different European countries ("Children Gold Hunters) and be involved in a discussion with professionals.
Recommended or required readings :
A reading list including articles, legal texts, reference documents as well as bibliographical references providing a deeper look into the subject will be made available to the students. This will be a reference point for the course as well as to carry out practical work.
Assessment methods and criteria :
Individual interview based on the report drafted for the practical work and related to the skills used during the class and concepts studied.
Criteria:
  • documentary richness,
  • relevance of the event identified in terms of professionalisation difficulties in the sector,
  • relevance and refinement of the analysis of gathered material (interview transcription, written documents, etc.), of the argument in regard to the challenges of professionalisation,
  • relationship between theory and practice.
