Language(s) of instruction :
English language
Organisation and examination :
Teaching in the first semester, review in January
Course contents :
The course introduces students to some lesser known works in anglophone literature and should thus develop their awareness of its cultural diversity. In 2013-14 it bears on contemporary Cypriot literature in English.
Learning outcomes of the course :
By the end of the course students should have increased their reading skills and developed sound habits of checking secondary literature. They should also have perceived tensions resulting from division and conflict and the simultaneous presence of different languages and cultures. One of the challenges of the course will indeed be to understand how difficult tolerance can be in the memory of past atrocities. the physical presence of several writers dedicated to this cause should help.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Good knowledge of English.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Since many will be discovering diversity thanks to the ERASMUS exchange programme, the number of students ought to be sufficiently low for the course to take the form of a seminar with all students actively involved. They will of course have previously read the works to be considered in class and will have explored the context in which they were produced.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Face-to-face (http://cipl82.philo.ulg.ac.be/horaires)
Recommended or required readings :
poems by Stephanos Stephanides, Nora Nadjarian and AydIn Mehment Ali; stories by Nora Nadjarian and AydIn Mehmet Ali; excerpts from Stavros Stavrou Karayanni's essay.
Assessment methods and criteria :
Students will have to write an essay at home. They will be assessed on their participation in class and on the marks they receive for this essay; the final mark will be determined by a written examination followed by an oral feedback in January.
