Course contents :
In this course we will be reading 1950s and 1960s African American drama. We will study the plays of three of the best known playwrights from this period and discuss the issues that they raise, such as race, gender, class, and religion. This will include understanding the historical contexts out of which these plays derive, including the Civil Rights Movement, Black Power, and the Nation of Islam. Furthermore, we will discuss the choice of theatre as an art form and the effects of choosing particular theatrical styles.
Learning outcomes of the course :
The students will gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the distinctive potentials of the dramatic form. They will be able to reflect on the relationship between drama and historical and political events. Through an appraisal of relevant theory, students will develop the necessary skills to critically analyse the texts on this course.
