In-class course (45 hours) The course will be composed of two parts: Q1
The first part of the course will be internet-based. Tasks will be posted on eCampus every Tuesday, and students will be required to have completed the task by either the following Tuesday or the set deadline. Tasks will include: - listening comprehension activities based on audio recordings dealing with issues in psychology.
- reading comprehension of authentic English texts. - theory and exercises adapted to improving your academic English skills and developing a better understanding of different characteristics of academic writing. - Written assignments based on the listening comprehension and reading comprehension tasks.
Q2 The second part of the year will follow a more traditional organisation, with classes given in 2-hour slots. The classes will include the following activities: - continuing the work on academic English begun in Q1; - listening comprehension activities based on audio recordings dealing with issues in psychology;
- Oral work: discussions, debates, oral presentations, seminars + workshops; - Producing a written report in correct academic English.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
By the end of the course, the student will be able to:
  • write a clear, smoothly-flowing text with an appropriate style and a logical structure;
  • present a clear and smoothly-flowing description or argument in a style appropriate to the context and with an effective, logical structure;
  • express him or herself fluently and, in the event of difficulty, effectively and smoothly restructure a sentence;
  • read and understand long and complex factual, literary and specialist articles and texts without too much effort;
  • understand extended speech, even when relationships are only implied, and adapt to different accents.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
This course is the continuation of last year's course, so the level corresponds to the European level C1+. Thus, students will need to have a comprehensive knowledge of the vocabulary and grammar studied in the previous years of their degree.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
This class uses a dynamic approach to using English specific to the domain of psychology. Students will principally be concentrating on fine-tuning their listening and speaking skills
  • The transmission of grammar and vocabulary through authentic articles and podcasts;
  • Practice in using grammar and domain-specific vocabulary in short written texts and adapted exercises;
  • Listening exercises based on authentic sources;
  • Presentations and workshops given in a real-life setting;
  • Debates and discussions on themes linked to psychology.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :  
Q1 Distance learning via eCampus. Q2 Weekly 2 hour class in a group of about 25 students. Students are required to prepare exercises and work on their extended report at home on a weekly basis.

English for Psychology Students, Advanced Level E This course-book contains diverse authentic articles, grammar reminders, listening comprehension exercises and academic writing tips. The manual is currently under revision and will be published unit-by-unit on e-campus. Assessment methods and criteria :  
1. Written exam - 3/20 A written summary of an unseen text. 2. Oral exam - 3/20 Presentation of final report + discussion 3. Listening comprehension - 3/20
Questions on a new and authentic recording. 4. Classwork 3/20
  • A summary of the presentation or one aspect in paticular of the presentation (individual pice of work).
  • The powerpoint, the agenda and any other documents used in the oral presentation and workshop (communal mark)
  • The best two out of four marked listening comprehension tasks
  • General participation in class and on the blog.
  • An average of the written assignments set in Q1
  • Individual oral presentation (see "classwork" in the folder entitled "course information" on e-campus)
5. Oral pressentation and workshop in class - 3/20 Oral presentation to be given in groups (free choice of subject) plus a workshop to be given individually. 6. Written report - 5/20
A written report of 8-10 pages written in academic English (free choice of subject, but students are strongly advised to write a report based on their final dissertation which could be useful to them in the future).
