Course contents :
 |
| Students will be taught how to write an academic critical review of articles from scientific publications in their fields of study. They will also be taught how to give a professional presentation. |

Learning outcomes of the course :

| At the end of the course students will be able to:
- write a literature review.
- follow complex and precise instructions about style, citations and references from the APA manual.
- give efficient and attractive oral presentations.
The CEFRL objective level of the course is C1 in all four language skills.
One of the fundamental ideas of this course is that students will be able to apply their English language skills to their core subject. |

Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :

| This is an upper-intermediate to advanced level course (CEFRL C1). The level required to take this course is upper-intermediate (CEFRL B2/C1), which corresponds to the level of the Level-2 English course (LANG0003-3). |

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
 |
| As this is a blended-learning course, students will have to be actively involved in choosing the topic of their literature review and getting the support of a promoter from members of their faculty.
The chapters have been designed to incorporate vocabulary from a range of sociological topics as well as to reinforce the language skills required to write academic English and to interact in an English-speaking academic and / or professional environment.
The class uses an exercise-based approach to learning how to write correct academic English in APA style and how to give a professional-looking presentation.
Students are encouraged to practice and rehearse in class. |

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :

| The class is taught for three hours every week.
In the second term, one of these hours will be devoted to seminar sessions in smaller groups focusing on the students' literature reviews. For these seminar sessions, students will be divided into several groups, which will take place using a rota for which students will receive a timetable.
Attendance is essential. |

| Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th edition.
The chapters of the coursebook will be made available online (on eCampus) and at Intercopy in the Sart Tilman. |

Assessment methods and criteria :
 |
| During the year, students will be given regular in-class quizzes and will have to write one in-class essay, all of which will count for 4 points out of the 20 points that make up the final mark in the first session.
Students will be required to write a literature review (critical review) and give an oral presentation based on it. Students will be expected to follow the APA publication guidelines as specified in their handbook. Review articles will have to be double-spaced in Times New Roman 12, and be between 10 and 15 pages long, title and reference pages included.
Half the marks will be given for content by the sociology teachers on the jury. The other half will be given by the English teachers for language, presentation and writing skills.
First session:
Two printed copies of the review article will have to be handed in before Tuesday, April 22nd 2014 at 12.00. One of the printed copies must be handed in to Ms Salerno and the other put in the ISLV mailbox in B33 level -1. Students must also send an electronic version of the article to their supervisor and their English teacher on April 22nd at 12.00 at the latest.
Be warned that students will not be allowed to present their work in the first session should the following occur:
- Non-respect of the deadline.
- Plagiarism / Failing to cite sources properly
- Use of non-English sources
- Use of fewer than three different sources
- Writing fewer than 10 pages or more than 20 pages in the right format. (Reviews between 15 and 20 pages will be penalised.)
- Attending less than 70% of the lessons. (If exceptional circumstances prevail, the students will be required to contact their teacher in writing before the beginning of classes in the second semester if the situation is already known to them or as soon as the situation occurs.)
In the first session, the marks will be distributed as follows:
- continuous assessment : 4/20
- written literature review : 8/20
- oral presentation : 8/20
Second session:
Students whose reviews have been refused for plagiarism, incorrect citing - which includes dishonest paraphrasing or misquoting - may also have to change topics for the second session and cannot expect further supervision.
The students will be responsible for finding a (new) promoter to validate their new topic, read their critical reviews and attend their presentation.
Two printed copies of the review article will have to be handed in before Monday, August 18th at 12.00. One of the printed copies must be handed in to Ms Salerno and the other put in the ISLV mailbox in B33 level -1. Students must also send an electronic version of the article to their supervisor and their English teacher on August 18th at the latest.
Students should be aware that they will be given a 0/20 for the course in the second session should the following occur:
- Non-respect of the deadline.
- Plagiarism / Failing to cite sources properly
- Use of non-English sources
- Use of fewer than three different sources
- Writing fewer than 10 pages or more than 20 pages in the right format. (Essays between 15 and 20 pages will be penalised.)
Students retaking in August will be required to take both parts of the exam.
In the second session, the marks will be distributed as follows:
- written literature review : 10/20
- oral presentation : 10/20
