'Major Gothic sculpture compositions in France (1150-1250)'
Sculpture in the years 1150-1250 is usually qualified as 'Gothic'. This period is mainly marked by monumental sculpture associated with religious edifices; subsequently it moved away from architectural and religious structures. Gateways are decorated with large sculpted compositions larger than anything seen previously. New iconographic themes emerged (hagiographic cycles, royal figures, Marian themes); others, already commonly used in the Romance period, developed and became richer (notably the Last Judgement). Besides the exterior, the interior of cathedrals also developed - responding to new liturgical requirements (the rood screen, for example) - and adorned with images.
The seminar, which is divided into three distinct parts, will cover the following subjects (1st part of the course: Particularities of Gothic sculpture, presentation of major compositions and analysis of different approaches - methodological sessions; 2nd part of the course: Analysis of selected major sculpted compositions - students applying theory to practical examples; 3rd part: conclusions and outlook), we will study the different methods of approaching these compositions as well as the compositions themselves. The historiography of Gothic sculpture, the formal evolution of gateways, different themes prized at the time, sculpted 'programmes', site practices, styles and polychromy will thus be studied. |
