Course contents :  
This course will cover the 9 main themes:
1) The four essential inter-cultural skills.
2) The seven universal intercultural dimensions.
3) The definition of culture and assertiveness.
4) The importance of values and beliefs in our own cultural model.
5) Understanding how to communicate with different cultures.
6) Knowing how to reinforce our personal and professional assertiveness to communicate more efficiently and obtain a better overall performance in the workplace.
7) How to evaluate an intercultural experience in the company.
8) How to design an individual action plan.
This course can be adapted to the four courses of the university program in the following way:
1) Flexibility: reinforcing interdisciplinary activity-the ability to manage the uncertain.
2) Leadership and teamwork: developing know-how and life-skills with multicultural teams both in-house and by interaction.
3) Personal development in the company: reinforcing self-knowledge on a more global scale and therefore bridging the first basic step towards leadership.
4) problem-solving: the cultural dimension offers more holistic responses to the specific problems encountered in our working universe (globalization; dissemination of information by new technologies).


  • The interest of this course for students lies in the concrete contribution made by a more global and holistic dimension to management of human and professional relationships
  • The sequencing of subjects and its justification will be defined later.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
- By the end of the course, the students will be capable of:
1) Developing knowledge and understanding of problems linked to assertive communication in a context of diversity.
2) Showing awareness of and respecting cultural diversity, differences and individual strengths in order to develop the best level of interaction with each member of the group/team.
3) Showing the skills necessary for carrying out communication tasks in a more efficient way within a multicultural environment. This will include feedback and problem-solving.
4) Developing relationships that make it possible for everyone to feel included and recognizing the meaning of this relationship and enabling everyone to be ready and flexible to change for the better.
-The course will enable students to know how to identify the point where each individual must evolve or change his or her manner and style of communication and improve efficiency when the individual in question is in a professional situation in a multicultural context.
The main attributes taught during the course will be:
1) Intercultural sensitivity.
2) Intercultural communication.
3) Involvement and motivation.
4) Action and communication in an uncertain context.
-To demonstrate what they know or are capable of accomplishing by the end of this learning sequence students will have to:
1) Supply proof of the practical application of elements learned in a company situation.
2) Demonstrate agility with regard to assertive communication when faced with a diversity of interlocutors and intercultural situations
-No course is required as a complement to this learning sequence at any stage.
-Knowledge, know-how or life-skills which students will be expected to learn will be based on confrontation and diversity (general education, studies, holidays, hobbies, courses, professional life etc.
-A diagnostic test will be organized at the start of the course.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
-To teach this course, the following pedagogical approaches will be applied:
1) Lectures and presentation of models and concepts.
2) Self-assessment questionnaires
3) Individual and collective coaching and mentoring.
4) Case studies and experience-based exercises
5) Observations by external professionals.
6) Pedagogical interactions and group-thinking.
7) Design of projects to be put into practice in their professional environment.
-Students will have to behave like "good citizens" in the context of the course and to this effect they will demonstrate:
1) Punctuality.
2) Presence.
3) Participation.
4) Confidentiality.
5) Proactivity.
6) Confrontation (assertiveness, exchanging different points of view)
7) Respect.
-To help students to reach the learning objectives of the course the most important approaches learned will be:
1) The combination of different approaches.
2) The iterative learning cycle with a view to continuous improvement.
-In accordance with the type of learning promoted, all possible interactions will be favored (students-teacher; student-student; student-tutor) including observers from the professional world.
These interactions will be on a face-to-face basis with the exception of sessions and classes involving professional activities. Unfamiliar learning strategies will be applied to this end.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :  
The teaching method described will be mixed (face-to-face and distance learning)
Recommended or required readings :  
  • The texts required for the course will be extracts from the work of Richard Lewis and Fons Trompenaars
  • Supplementary or alternative resources such as videos and extracts from films will be made available to the students in digital format.
Assessment methods and criteria :  
- Assessment will be based on:
1) Questions to long open answers (case management).
2) The relation between the application of acquired learning to the professional environment (phase 2 intermediary between the common core and specific modules), including feedback from one or two individuals with whom the student has had multicultural interaction.
3) Defense of this report on the practical application of acquired learning to the professional environment.
-These assessments will mainly test the ability of the student to practice knowledge in a new context.
-The criteria for success will depend on the concrete demonstration of the application of the four intercultural skills (see above: "Learning outcomes of the course").
-Each assessment activity will contribute to the final mark in accordance with the following percentages:
  • 25% questions to long open answers (Case management and multiple choice).
  • 25% report on the practical application of acquired learning to the professional world.
  • 50% defense of the report (with assertiveness).
-This assessment aims to develop self-reflection and directly and concretely connect acquired learning with professional behavior.
Work placement(s) :  
The certificate will plan for course periods and a return to teaching. The expected results of the course and the integration between theory and practice are defined in the above paragraph "assessment".
Organizational remarks :  
-The rules governing procedure are those explained in the above paragraph "behave like good citizens".
-In the context of this course, it is planned to include study councils, to attract the attention of students to certain structures or structures that can usefully assist them.
-The course notes and syllabi will be given to the students under the following terms:
1) Exercises, cases and other development tools for participants will be communicated before the class session.
2) The syllabi explaining the theory and models concerned will be distributed later.
