Course contents :  
The course comprises two parts: 1.introduction to Intellectual Property (teacher:N.Antheunis) to initiate the Student to the rules of Intellectueal Property(IP), their importance, and how to implement them. 2.the quality insurance (teacher :J.Dommes)

More specificaly the course comprises:
  • Intellectual Property, copyright, trademarks and other distinctive signs, designs, trade secret, patents, Invention, patentability conditions.
  • patentability in life science.
  • different patent prosecutions: national, regional and international.The unitary patent. Different strategies, steps in patent prosecution and time constraints, priority right.
  • Importance of the lab book, management of results versus IP strategy, confidentiality management.
  • transactions involving IP: License/assignment: definition, types, return .
  • freedom to operate and infringement: definition, types, examples.
The part of the course dealing with Quality management will include :
  • Introduction : why a quality-based management in the laboratory ?
  • Good laboratory practices
  • ISO 9001:2000
  • Other standards
  • A few examples
Learning outcomes of the course :  
Regarding "introduction to Intellectual Property:
-to understand what is Intellectual Property and its importance. -to know what is patentable in life science and to be able to detect a new potentially patentable invention. -to use patent information in research project -to manage security rules when involve in a research project. - to describe how to protect an Invention and to select the best strategy.
For the part of the course dealing with quality insurance : - to be aware of quality management in laboratory work - to understand what is a quality standard and a laboratory certification.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
Practical exercises by case analysis at each course for the Introduction to Intellectual Property Presentation widely illustrated by exemples and exercises for Quality Insurance.

face to face

Powerpoint presentations and various documents available on eCampus.
Assessment methods and criteria :  
Oral examination including questions on theory as well as exercices. To pass, a mark of at least 8/20 is needed in each part of the course and a mean of at least 10/20 (otherwise the lowest mark will be considered as the total mark).
