| The course will consist of close readings of a sample of short stories by English-speaking authors, among whom Angela Carter and Janet Frame. A second part will subsequently focus on Gail Jones's novel Sorry, as well as on various critical approaches to the latter, thus attempting to familiarize the students to the use of secondary material. |

| Enhance the students' ability to understand and interpret literary texts of whatever denomination, and to provide written analyses in the form of articulate essays in English. |

| Next to the seminars, some attention will be devoted to the difficulties of essay-writing and to the conventions governing the compilation of a bibliography. |

| Apart from the short stories (which will be circulated in class) and the novel by Jones, the student must read two novels (chosen from a list which will be made available; see below).

Modalités d'évaluation et critères :
|
| A written and an oral exam will be organized in May/June and in August/September, 2014. The written exam will consist of an analysis of a short story, while the oral exam will take the form of a discussion of Sorry and of two novels (of the student's free choice), read in the light of the relevant secondary literature. |
