Course contents :
The seminar "Migration and development" seeks to introduce the student to the study of the interaction between international migratory movement and processes of development. It starts from a multi-discriplinary approach and seeks to allow the students to get acquainted to the diversity of approaches in the field. The course starts with a series of lectures on the main migration theories, the concepts of migration and development, the concept of remittances, transnationalism and diasporas. Subsequently, the course will consist of thematic sessions during which specific topic (or case studies) will be discussed by the instructor and guest lecturers. These thematic sessions include the case of the role of Mexican emigrants in the US in the development of their home communities, the economic activities of African diasporas, the role NGOs and the the effect of climate change on migration and development. The last sessions of these courses are devoted to student presentations.
Learning outcomes of the course :
The objective of the seminar is to allow a greater familiarity with the diversity of theoretical approaches of migration and development and to allow students to lead a multi-disciplinary reflection on these questions
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
The course is taught in French but most readings and some audiovisual material used are in English. Students can submit their position paper in English.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
A writting assignment is expected from the students (in English or French). The paper is also presented in class in front of other students. Active participation in class discussions and debates is also expected.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Students are expected to be present and active participants in the course
Recommended or required readings :
Before each class, students are expected to read one scientific article related to the topic of the lecture. These readings are indispensable to be able to participate in class. The reading list is provided at the beginning of the course.
Assessment methods and criteria :
The evaluation is based on 3 criteria:

1. Active participation in class (4 points out of 20)
Active participation refers to the ability of students to contribute to class discussions on the topic covered during the lecture AND by the ability to make use of class reading during those discussions. It also includes participation in the presentation of other students' position papers in class.

2. Position paper (12 points)
The position paper is an essay of minimum 5000 words and maximum 5500 words (excluding front page, index, reference list, annexes...). It comprises not only a review of the literature on a specific question related to the class but it also comprises a critical discussion of this literature showing its strengths, weaknesses and possible contradictions. This is thus more than a literature review as it requires the positioning of students on the theoretical debates.
The paper can be written in either French or English. Students are expected to pay particular attention to formal aspects: spelling, typos, consistency of the references...

The paper demonstrates the student's ability to:
-collect most of the relevant literature on a topic and list it correctly
-summarize the main theoretical issues on a determined issue
-show the strength and weaknesses of the inter-disciplinary approach in the field of migration and development
-show the possible contradictions in the literature
-develop a paper with critical thinking

3. Oral presentation (4points)
During the 2 last sessions of the seminar (3 if necessary), students present the main findings of their paper during a 10-minute presentation accompanied with a powerpoint presentation. This oral presentation is in English or French.

Second session:

Students who fail this class at the end of the quadrimester can resubmit a position paper and defend it orally in front of the instructor.
