MATH0478-2  Introduction to numerical methods

Duration :  10h Th, 20h Pr
Number of credits :
Bachelor in engineering sciences, civil ingineer in architecture orientation, 2nd year3
Bachelor in computer sciences, 1st year2
One-year preliminary programme leading to the Master in Computer Sciences3
Lecturer :  Quentin Louveaux
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Organisation and examination :
Teaching in the second semester
Course contents :
Numerical analysis is at the boundary between Mathematics and Computer Science. It consists in studying how to practically obtain in a computer different mathematical concepts studied in other courses.
This course gives a brief introduction on good ways to implement a numerical method.
The lecture is divided in four main chapters where the ideas of each topic are sketched: - number representations in a computer - interpolation - Non-linear equations - Ordinary differential equations
Learning outcomes of the course :
- representation of numbers in a computer and implications on the roundoff errors in floating point computing - numerical methods for the resolution of nonlinear equations and ordinary differential equations - basic concepts of the software matlab
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
High-school mathematics
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Four tutorials are organized, where the concepts from the theoretical lecture are put in practice. Four sessions are also organized in the computer rooms, where the matlab language is taught.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
face-to-face
Recommended or required readings :
Lecture notes are available at the Centrale des Cours.
Assessment methods and criteria :
An exam is organized. It is split into an exercise part (75% of the final grade) and a theoretical part (25% of the final grade). The matlab exercise accounts for 25% of the final grade. The matlab test is compulsory.
ATTENTION: A no-show either for the matlab test or for the written exam will lead to an "absent" mark for the whole course.
Work placement(s) :
Organizational remarks :
The theory part is common with the PROJ0001 lecture taught to the first year in engineering. The exercise part is only taught in this course.
