| The course of this year will study "The magic realism in French-speaking Belgium". Born in Germany in the 1930s, the magic realism is a novelistic aesthetics which had a remarkable international expansion (Italy, Latin America, Flanders, etc.). At the same time, in French-speaking Belgium, takes shape from the end of the 19th century the image of "fantastic Belgium", the cultivated shape of which will take the name of "fantastic realism" or fantastic reality", in the lineage of the symbolism. Finally, in France, in the trail of the NRF, Jacques Rivière develops the theme of a "poetic novel" supposed to correct the materialist and determinist excesses of the zolian realism. It is therefore in the crossroads of all these influences that developed in French-speaking Belgium a vein of the magic realism in which we find authors such as Franz Hellens, Robert Poulet, Paul Willems or Guy Vaes. The purpose of the course will be to redraw the genesis of the magic realism in French-speaking Belgium and the stakes which preside over the mobilization of this aesthetic category. |
