Course contents :
This course will provide an introduction to stylistics and critical discourse analysis, two sub-disciplines of linguistics devoted to the analysis of texts. Whereas stylistics primarily concentrates on the linguistic examination of literary material, critical discourse analysis studies how the linguistic features of non-literary discourse reflect particular ideologies.
Following an outline of the common features and differences between these two critical movements, the course will consist in a series of thematic modules (involving both theory and practice) designed to offer an overview of some the concepts most commonly used in stylistics and/or critical discourse analysis. Among the topics studied will be those of register, transitivity, and metaphor.
Learning outcomes of the course :
Upon completion of the course, students will master the theoretical models discussed in class, and they will have acquired the methodological skills needed to develop original analyses of literary and non-literary texts.
