Course contents :
 |
| This course has two main objectives. On a theoretical level, it aims at introducing the students to the basic notions of text linguistics on the one hand, and to linguistic variation on the other. On a more practical level, the objective is to improve the different language skills of the students (as well the productive as the receptive skills).
In the theoretical part, we will tackle the basic notions of text linguistics on the one hand (text and discourse, referential coherence, relational coherence, metadiscourse,...) and analyze the linguistic features of different (standard and substandard) varieties of Dutch on the other.
In the practical part we will improve the different language skills through the following activities:
- oral presentations;
- writing exercises (essays);
- vocabulary exercises;
- a retranscription.
These different activities will allow the students to sharpen their theoretical and practical knowledge of Dutch to make them more sensible to its linguistic diversity. |

Learning outcomes of the course :

| At the end of this course, the students will be able to:
- list and describe the basic notions of text linguistics and to apply them to the analysis of Dutch language;
- list and describe the linguistic features of different varieties of Dutch;
- transcribe the Dutch and Flemish versions of a film sequence;
- write a coherent essay in Dutch (C1 level);
- understand specialized texts in Dutch (C1 level);
- hold a specialized conersation in Dutch (C1 level).
At the end of this course, the students will also have acquired a high level of lexical knowledge (C1 level) |

For the practical part of the coure, we will use the following book:

Assessment methods and criteria :

| The evaluation consist of an oral examen and a written exam.
The written exam includes the following parts:
- theoretical issues discussed in the course (as well regarding text linguistics as linguistic variation);
- exercices related to these theoretical issues;
- the vocabulary of the book Goed verbonden;
- an essay.
The oral exam includes the following parts:
- the discussion of two scientific articles dealing with varieties of Dutch;
- the discussion of the transcription of film sequences.
- the discussion of a news file consisting of 5 A4 articles and 5 minutes audio and/or video report.
The final grade will be determined as follows:
- Theoretical part (20%)(written exam).
- Vocabulary (10%)(written exam)
- Speaking proficiency (30%)(oral exam+presentation of a scientific article+presentation of a news topic+presentation of a scientific article)
- Writing proficiency (20%)(written exam+paper on the differences between the Dutch and Flemish versions of a film)
- Transcription paper (20%)(transcription+contents)
If one student fails for one of these parts, the final grade will be 8/20. S/he will then have to retake the parts for which s/he didn't get 12/20.
The oral and written exams of the first session will take place during the january exam session; the oral and written exams of the second session will take place at choice during the june or september exam session. |
