Course contents :  
The course introduces students to some lesser known works in anglophone literature and should thus develop their awareness of its cultural diversity. In 2012-13 it bears on contemporary Scottish literature, covering all main genres.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
By the end of the course students should have increased their reading skills and developed sound habits of checking secondary literature. They should also have perceived tensions resulting from wishes for independence on the one hand and the simultaneous presence of three languages and different cultures. One of the challenges of the course will indeed for them to make sense of texts that reproduce at least partly Dcottish dialect and Scottish pronunciation.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
Good knowledge of English.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
Since many will be discovering diversity thanks to the ERASMUS exchange programme, the number of students ought to be sufficiently low for the course to take the form of a seminar with all students actively involved. They will of course have previously read the works to be considered in class and will have explored the context in which they were produced.

  • Poems by Gordon Meade (The Familiar, Arrowhead 2011), John Glenday (Grain, Picador 2009) and Kate Armstrong, as well as other poems from the anthology Dream State: New Scottish Poets (Donny O'Rourke, ed., Polygon, 2002);
  • the play by Liz Lochhead, Mary Queen of Scots Got Her Head Chopped Off (Nick Hern Books, 2009);
  • stories from Kathleen Jamie's collection Findings (Sort of Books, 2005);
  • James Robertson, The Testament of Gideon Mack (Penguin, 2007);
  • Irvine Welsh, Train Spotting (Vintage 2008 -1993, with a screening of the 1996 film directed by Danny Boyle)

Assessment methods and criteria :  
Students will have to write an essay at home. They will be assessed on their participation in class and on the marks they receive for this essay, but the final mark will be determined by a written examination followed by an oral feedback in January.

First term. Wednesday 10-12. Two of the poets considered in class will be in Liege in October: John Glenday for the Mixed Zone festival (http://www.mixedzone.ulg.ac.be/programme.html) abd the poetry Biennal, and Kate Armstrong end of October.
