Course contents :

| Academic year 2012-2013:
"Biblical iconography and dogmatic iconography in the gothic period (12th-16th centuries)"
From the 12th until the 16th century, Christian iconography experienced an unprecedented development. Image makers suddenly represented biblical episodes which they had never painted or sculpted before. Besides, new subjects such as the "pieta" were invented. Finally, certain dogmas experienced original iconographic developments - we think for example of the dogma of the Trinity.
During the seminar, we will analyse some twenty works of art from an iconography perspective. We will connect these iconographies with the developments in exegesis, philosophy and theology of that time. |

Learning outcomes of the course :

| Learn how to make a research on a building or its firnishings, and how to write a scientific report, both precise and concise about a medieval topic; also, how to raise interest within a knowledgeable audience. |

| Having followed the course "Histoire de l'art et archéologie du Moyen Age: de l'époque paléo-chrétienne à l'époque romane" and "Histoire de l'art et archéologie du Moyen Age: l'époque gothique".

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :

| Write a 3-page scientific report and give an oral presentation of around twenty minutes on a work of art. |

| The first lesson will take place on Friday 21 September at 2:00 pm. During this lesson the agenda will be specified and the subjects will be assigned.
A trip is planned to Berlin (Bodemuseum) from 31 October 2011 until 4 November 2012.
This course is part of a comprehensive specialised training in relation with the activities of the research centre "TRANSITIONS - Centre d'Etudes du Moyen Age tardif et de la première Modernité". |
