Course contents :
|
| Life appeared about 3.5 billion years ago. Major clades within the three domains of life: Bacteria, Archaea and Eucarya, diversified during the Precambrian, well before the Phanerozoic. This course will discuss the multidisciplinary methods required to trace the early evolution of life between 3.8 and 0.54 billions years. |

Learning outcomes of the course :

| At the end of the class, the student has to be able to:
-understand the methods used to study precambrian traces of life
-know the major steps of evolution within the various clades of the three of life
-understand and summarize english scientific papers
-write a term paper and present it in front of the class |

Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :

| In addition to face-to-face teaching and illustrations with material (rocks, fossils, video)
during class, one or two students will present a scientific paper in front to the class. This paper will be given by the professor one week ahead and will permit to review the content of the last class. |

Recommended or required readings :
|
| Scientific papers and reference books will be accessible to the students. The book "Life on a Young Planet" par AH Knoll (Princeton univ Press, 2003, 277 p) will serve as a base for the introduction, together with recent literature.

Assessment methods and criteria :

| the evaluation will include
-a written report and oral presentation (65% of final mark)
-understanding and presenting a paper (10%)
-oral examination (25% of final mark) |
