Lecturer :  Célia Joaquim-Justo, Angélique Léonard, Roberto Renzoni, Emmanuël Sérusiaux
Coordinator :  Célia Joaquim-Justo
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Organisation and examination :
Teaching in the first semester, review in January
Course contents :
The course includes three parts.
The first part is taught by Prof. Sérusiaux and concerns mainly nature conservation. It takes the point of view of a historic analysis and a socio-cultural approach to nature conservation. The main subject is by all means that of nature conservation within the global concept of development and the impact of resources exploitation and land managements in NW Europe
The second part taught by Dr. Joaquim-Justo concerns the impacts that anthropic pressures exert on ecosystems. This part includes a historic perspective of human impacts on the biosphere, the interferences with the main biogeochemical cycles, impacts due to toxic pollutants, physical pollutions and their impacts on ecosystems. Management strategies are consisdered for each compartment (air, soil, water).

The third part of the course is taught by Prof. Léonard and Dr. Renzoni. It concerns the impacts due to specific industrial activities.
Learning outcomes of the course :
The main objective of the third part of this course is to give learners a methodology and tools to help them throughout their career to seek, identify and evaluate information on the environmental impacts of human activities.
One objective of the course is to familiarize the student with the key concepts relating to environmental impacts and identify the behavior of pollutants; another objective is to learn methods of forming pollutants generated by human activities, methods of detection and reduction of these pollutants.
The learner will be introduced to the problems of pollution sources, characterization techniques, preventive and curative approaches.
He will be able to understand a remediation project knowing the main existing techniques for decontamination of effluents in different sectors.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
The material taught by Prof. Sérusiaux and Dr. Renzoni is mainly taught through lectures.
The part taught by the Dr. Joaquim-Justo consists in the preparation and the presentation of the state, ressources, anthropic pressures and management prespectives of the environement treated by biomes.
During the first course an intrduction to the genral context of the course is presented; working groups are formed and reference books are distributed.
Working sessions are scheduled to allow students to perform bibliographic researches and to prepare a presentation and a detailed written document concerning the biome they are in charge of. Working sessions with the teacher are also scheduled to discuss the progress and content of the documents prepared by the students.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Teaching will consist of lectures.
Recommended or required readings :
Information and documents will be handed during the first course session.
Assessment methods and criteria :
The evaluation of the material taught by Prof. Sérusiaux and Dr. Renzoni will consist of a written test
Concerning the part taught by Dr. Joaquim-Justo, 50% of the score correspond to the evaluation of the presentation and the written document provided concerning the biome treated. The other 50% correspond to a written exam covering all biomes (and their respective state, ressources, anthropic pressures and management perspectives).
The final grade is the mean of the scores earned for the three parts taught.
