Botanical systems

- Foundations of botanic systematics - Evolutionary trends of flowering plants - Main botanic families and outstanding members from a human persepctive

Organisation of seeded plants

Flowers and inflorescences, fruits and seeds, the meristematic cell, cell division and differentiation, the tissues, the root (anatomy and morphology), the shoot (anatomy and morphology), the leaf (anatomy and morphology, photosynthesis)

Plant diversity and evolution

  • Position of plant organisms in the classification of living beings,
  • Moners,
  • Eucaryotes - general principles,
  • Fungi (fungal protists and mycetes),
  • Eucaryotic algae,
  • Bryophytes,
  • Pteridophytes,
  • From ovules to seeds,
  • The angiosperms.

Initiation to the study of plant life

  • Structure of vegetation, patterns in space and time
  • Interpretation of plant communities by using biogeographical, ecological and historical criteria
  • Dynamics of the plant cover
  • Biomes : main types of vegetations in the world

Learning outcomes of the course :
Botanical systems

- To identify, name and classify outstanding representative species of higher plants, mainly flowering plants - To use a reference flora in order to identify the family and species of seed plants of the Belgian flora

Organisation of seeded plants

  • To describe the different organs of a seed plant and how they are put in place during plant development
  • To describe the anatomic organization of plant organs
  • To link the major plant functions (photosynthesis, mineral nutrition) to the underlying structures

Plant diversity and evolution

  • To situate the major categories within the classification of living beings,
  • To understand the unity and diversity of plants,
  • To interprete the diversity of plants through their evolutionary history,
  • To describe the major trends of reproduction and development in plants.

Initiation to the study of plant life

To describe and interprete the vegetation by the use of physionomical, floristical, ecological and historical criteria
