Course contents :

| The course of the second master degree in veterinary medicine follows the teachings of semiology animal production (VETE0448-1) delivered in the first year of master degree graduate clinical training and precedes the clinical trainings organized during the 3rd yera of master degree in veterinary medicine. As is seen, the teachings of theriogenologu in animal production are organized continuously and progressively more complex.
The second master degree has 4 parts (35 hours). The first (14 chapters) deals with diseases of the waiting period of the puberty (anoestrus, free-Martinism, White Heifer disease ...) or the postpartum (placental retention, endometritis, uterine involution, anoestrus, ovarian cysts ), the period of reproduction (embryonic death, infertility) and gestation (abortions and other diseases), the female and male reproductive diseases. Emphasis is also placed on a more holistic approach through the chapter on reproductive management system (data collection, quantification and interpretation). The second part (four chapters) is dedicated to obstetrics. It concerns the pharmacological control of parturition, the causes of dystocia but also handling obstetric bleeding and not bleeding interventions and complications of parturition. The third part (three chapters) discusses reproductive biotechnologies namely artificial insemination and methods of production in vivo and in vitro embryos. The fourth part (2 chapters) more specific to ruminants is restricted to individual aspects and herd udder health.
These parts are complementary to two hours of training on reproductive and obstetrical diseases in pigs (Dr. Martine Laitat) and three hours devoted to more specific relations between between the pathologies of reproduction and metabolism (Dr. Hugues Guyot). |

Learning outcomes of the course :
| The general objectives of this course are (1) describe as broadly as possible the different reproduction, obstetrical and mammary pathologies of the male and female ruminants and pigs responsible for infertility in an individual and herd approach (objectives of knowledge), (2) to force the students to understand the relationships that exist between these diseases and their mechanism effect on reproductive performance (objectives of understanding) and (3) to inform students about the preventive and curative attitude to have for the most i!mportant reproduction or mammary pathologies (application objectives).
The course focuses on the reasoning more than on factual knowledge. It is conceived as a whole. Each chapter of the course is subject to more specific objectives stated knowledge, understanding and application. It is not possible to present here an exhaustive list. The student will read them before each chapter of the course. More than teaching objectives, they are targets of evaluation that you consider important in making their definition and use. |
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
| Courses presupposes a good knowledge of physiology, embryology and anatomy of the male and female reproduction system in ruminants and pigs. Moreover, the information provided within the course of semiology animal production are essential elements in understanding the lessons of this course. |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
| Four clinics are organized. |
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
| The first hour is devoted to the presentation of the educational project and its modalities. Our teaching is a blended teaching (organized in presential and at distance). The main chapters of the course are delivered in amphitheater .
Wishing to gradually develop the self of the learner, some courses (applications of echography in reproduction, male pathologies, more specific pathologies of the female) will be organized at distance through the ECampus plateform. You're invited to go online and ask any questions through the relevant forum of discussion.
The attendance to the courses is strongly recommended. |
Recommended or required readings :
| Notes (Word and Power Point presentations accompanied by numerous illustrations and diagrams) have been written for all the 23 chapters of the course. They are annualy updated (you are invited to check the version, the content of certain chapters could be changed). They are available from the ECampus plateform or on the Orbi plateform (http://orbi.ulg.ac.be/simple-search?query=hanzen) . We draw your attention to the fact that the multimedia material (movies) illustrating the course is accessible only from the WebCT platform.
Videotapes and CD-ROM are also available to students in the service. They are available on site. |
Assessment methods and criteria :
| Evaluation of Theriogenology course (VETE 0443-1)
Formative and certifivative evaluations, are organized. |
