Course contents :
The aim of this seminar is to gradually lead students to confront the theory they have learnt with the concrete reality of public action. As a result, this seminar will take the form of practical workshops (simulations of real situations in small groups) organised around concrete aspects of public administration: constructing a political decision, interpreting a budget, re-enacting debates on an administrative circular or an advisory report from the Audit Office, developing critical opinions on aspects of public administration.
The seminar will be spread over three full non-consecutive days. The idea will be to "simulate life in a public service" throughout the time available and to completely immerse students in a rapid and efficient learning process by putting into action concrete case studies based on actual cases of public action.
Learning outcomes of the course :
The practical public administration seminar aims to confront final-year students with the practical stakes and issues they will encounter within the framework of their professional careers in "public life".
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Since the purpose of the seminar is to be integrative and largely oriented towards practical work, students participating in it must have acquired the essential bases of administrative sciences, public management, analysis of public policies, sociology of organisations as well as sufficient knowledge of public law (including public administration and public finance law).
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Interactive seminar based on interaction and simulation based on case studies.
Recommended or required readings :
No course notes. PowerPoint available to students.
A reading list and documents necessary for the development of the case studies will be available to students.
Assessment methods and criteria :
Students will be assessed according to their participation in the seminar, active participation criteria, integration in the group dynamics, their understanding of the case studies and their ability to use what they have learnt in the actual seminar.
