Course contents :  
The course introduce the particularity of qualitative approaches though successive stages in a scientific research (data collection, analysis and interpretation) and present an overview of selected analytical techniques : discourse analysis, content analysis and grounded theory methodology (GTM).
Practical work allows the students to test their knowledge by conducting and analyzing of an interview.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
The student will be able to
  • given a research question, decide whether a qualitative or a quantitative approach is relevant
  • accurately define qualitative terms
  • differentiate content analysis and discourse analysis from grounded theory methodology (GTM)
  • conduct an interview
  • actively participate to a collective analysis of text material
  • summarize results from a collective research
  • create accurate slides
  • speak in public
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
Introduction to methodology in social sciences
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
  • Theorical sessions are ex cathedra teaching, using slides.
  • Practical work consists in realizing a qualitative research (elaborating a research question, conducting and analysis of an interview).
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :  
Face to face for theoretical lessons and practical work.

Assessment methods and criteria :  
Written examination for both sessions The written examination and the and the practical work are each worth 50 % of the global note. However, if the note for one part is less than 8/20, it will automatically lead to a global note less than 8/20.
Organizational remarks :  
The course is given during the first term. The practical works are given during the two terms.
