- See the table of contents in the work by M. De Coster, B. Bawin Legros, M. Poncelet, Introduction à la sociologie, sixth edition, De Boeck, Brussels, 2006. The first part of the course, as with the book, aims to identify the history and perspective of sociology. The second part "Conceptual analysis of social reality" presents sociology in its entirety through three concepts: communication, power and role, by situating these on three levels.
These three levels are: interpersonal, group (or organisational) and societal (macro-sociological).
- This course constitutes a general introduction to sociology, its paradigms and main authors. It will introduce students to this discipline by looking at the basic concepts of role, power and communication through three levels of analysis (interpersonal, group and societal).

- Introduction to sociological theory
- Positioning sociology within the social sciences
- Understanding the main paradigms and their scientific status
- Examining the three key concepts of Power, Role and Communication on three sociological levels of analysis: interpersonal, organisational and macro-sociological
- An introduction to personal reading of recent, accessible texts
- Presenting a history of sociology as a scientific discipline and positioning sociology within the social sciences and arts.

| Students must read and understand accessible research articles provided and be capable of summarising them when questioned.

- Multiple choice written examination in the first session (May or June), multiple-choice written examination in the second session (August or September)
