Course contents :  
Pharmacognosy (partim 1) is mainly focused on phytochemistry: presntation of various kinds of primary (carbohydrates, lipids, proteins ) and mainly secondary metabolites (phenylpropanoids: lignans, flavonoids, coumarins.., terpenoids and steroids, alkaloids...)
Learning outcomes of the course :  
To treat the education of pharmacy students in the multidiciplinary field of pharmacognosy:-informations on phytochemical classes and metabolites (active principles mainly) ;-description of plants used not only in medicine but also in food and cosmetics; -specific methods of quality control of pharmacognosy described in European Pharmacopoiea ( drugs, extracts, essential oils, fixed oils...)

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
Practicals and seminars:
Extraction , identification and assay of active principles from medicinal plants (monographs of European Pharmacopoeia).
Laboratory of chemistry ( 4th floor) and laboratory of pharmaognosy (3d floor) of Pharmaceutical Institute (B36).
1st seminar: Monday 07/11/11 14-17h or Wednesday 09/11/2011 14-17h. TPs schedule:
Monday: 13.30-17.30 Tuesday: 8.30-12.30 ; 13.30-17.30
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :  
Face to face. Half-year 5. The First lesson will be given on Friday 16th September 2010 in Amphi JORISSEN at 10h30.
