Course contents :
This seminar is intended to develop the most cross-cutting of skills represented in the list of speech therapy skills used at the ULg, specifically, the abilities to 1) Establish a professional relationship with a patient, creating and maintaining a relationship based on confidence ; in so doing, communicating at all times in an appropriate manner ; 2) Develop the expertise needed in order to provide high quality speech therapy services to patients and to society as a whole, and to do so by remaining committed to a process of continuing education and professional development, and by observing faithfully the code of professional ethics. The seminar is divided into two parts, each one targeting one of these skill groups. In the first quadrimester the emphasis is on skills related to professional "Expertise". (instructors: Nancy Durieux & Christelle Maillart). In this section students learn about "Evidence-Based Practice" as a professional procedure. It is a methodology that allows for the uncertainty concerning a clinical decision to be reduced, since the therapeutic choice is based on the best knowledge coming from research and clinical practice, all while taking patients' preferences into account. In the second quadrimester, the seminar focuses on the skills involved in "Professional relationships" (instructors: Jean-Jacques Detraux, Brigitte Lejeune, Gisèle Martinot, Dominique Morsomme & Christelle Maillart). Working sessions will introduce a variety of themes linked to this aspect of professional life. Overall the seminar is a place for learning, which encourages the development of the ability to reflect, and favours opening up the compartmentalised fields of action within speech therapy, by suggesting shared moments for reflection about a particular problematic ( e.g., putting off the end of therapy, therapeutic choices). These are integrated learning patterns designed to help students gain perspective on the clinical experiences they will learn about as interns.
Learning outcomes of the course :
At the end of instruction for "Training in EBP" students should be able:
  • To describe the basic principles of Evidence-Based Practice;
  • To formulate a clinical question;
  • To research in databases of bibliographical data of appropriate literature so as to answer given clinical questions (search databases, eliminate non-pertinent information, list interesting articles) ;
  • Critically evaluate selected articles;
At the end of the seminar division on "Professional Relationships" skills, students should be able:
  • To describe the field of action of speech therapy;
  • To reflect upon his or her own practices /identities /professional representations;
  • To identify the conditions for initiating and continuing a good relationship with patients and/or their families and friends;
  • To make sure to adapt all verbal and non-verbal communication to the interlocutor and to the situation;
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Since the seminar is designed as a place for integration between theory and clinical practice, it is important for students to either be doing internships or to have a clinical practice to which they can refer.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
The seminar offers different kinds of instruction methods: in-class lectures, e-learning sessions, role playing or discussion of clinical cases in small groups with the help of a tutor.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
This class will meet the instructor. Students must keep up with class activities by following the class calendar, online.
Recommended or required readings :
Recommended readings for the EBP part of the course:

Roddam, H., & Skeat, J. (Eds.). (2010). Embedding evidence-based practice in speech and language therapy. Chichester, England : Wiley.

Dollaghan, C. A. ( 2007). The handbook of evidence-based practice in communication disorders. Baltimore, MD: Brookes Publishing.
Assessment methods and criteria :
Grading is based, on one hand, on a group project aimed at knowledge of the EBP, and on the other hand on the production of an individual portfolio. Each of these counts 50% toward the final mark. Successful completion of the entire course means getting a mark of 12/20. However, a failing mark in any part (less than 9/20) means that the student must repeat that part, even if the overall grade is equal to or higher than 12/20. From one session to another, a student can carry over a mark of 10/20 or higher to the next examination session, and this, for any part of the course. From one academic year to another, a student cannot obtain an overall report de note, or one for part of the course, unless a mark equal to or higher than 12/20 has been obtained.
