Course contents :
| We will explore the popularity of the seaside town in British culture, as well as its representation in the work of British and postcolonial writers. We will discuss the ways in which regionality and place impact on British identity as each of the texts draws attention to the ways in which outsiders and eccentrics converge at the borders of the land. These coastal borders also face the sea; and the sea becomes a potent and multifaceted symbol in each of the primary texts as Britain becomes linked to other lands and cultures, yet inevitably isolated by its island status. As the particularity of location and demographic of the British seaside resort is in some way multicultural in each of the texts, we will consider whether postcolonial readings of these texts can shed light on the ambivalence of this British traditon, and ask whether the division between 'the British' and 'the postcolonial' can be comfortably upheld. We will support our reading of the primary texts with films, TV series, cultural histories and postcolonial theory. |
Learning outcomes of the course :
| The aim of this course is to provide an introduction to the representation of British seaside resorts in cultural and literary texts from a perspective informed by postcolonial writing and theory. Students will gain an insight into the history of the British seaside town, and its literary representation as well as an understanding of the importance of landscape and place in British writing. They will also attain understanding of key theoretical ideas in postcolonial studies that will allow them to debate the relationship between 'British literature' and 'the postcolonial' |
