Course contents :
| After a brief introduction to the political and cultural situation in contemporary South Africa, with a special focus on the 'rainbow-nation' rhetorics of the post-Apartheid era, we shall consider three novels by major post-European novelists, namely:
Nadine Gordimer, The House Gun (1998)
J.M. Coetzee, Disgrace (1999)
Damon Galgut, The Impostor (2008; Bloomsbury) |
Learning outcomes of the course :
| The students will be (more) familiar with the political and cultural situation of contemporary South Africa, and with the complexities of settler self-definition in similar contexts.
They should also profit from the limbering up exercise that the course will constitute in terms of enhancing their interpretive capacities applied to complex literary texts. |
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
| The course will be taught and assessed in English. |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
| The course will take the form of interactive seminars animated by the teacher. |

Recommended or required readings :
| See above. |
Assessment methods and criteria :
| The students will be requested to write a personal essay on a subject of their own choice (in connection with the themes and texts discussed in class), and will be given the opportunity to justify their argument during an oral debriefing with the teacher.
The main criteria for assessment will include: originality of written essay; use of secondary literature; quality of written and spoken English. |
Organizational remarks :
| The course will be organized in the second term. |
