Course contents :
| This supplementary English module is meant for students in their third year of the bachelor's degree. It is complementary to the legal courses taught in English, i.e. The Law of Nationality : European and International Perspectives and Introduction to EC Competition Law.
It will make it possible for the students who attend the aforementioned legal courses to deal with them more easily linguistically speaking. Oral and other general academic skills will be focused on.
We will also study various language functions that are typical of the legal and academic context such as taking the floor or notes during class, arguing, telling facts, talking about a case brief, or reporting someone's words.
We will also refer to the vocabulary relevant to the law of nationality and competition law when practising the skills mentioned above. |
Learning outcomes of the course :
| At the end of this class, students' legal English skills in an academic environment will have improved.
Students will be better at speaking English during law classes. They will be better prepared to deal with them as far as the language is concerned. |
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
| This course is optional and recommended to the students who will have been selected on the basis of a level test. |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
| Classes will not exceed 25 students and we expect active participation from them.
We will invite students to learn about/reactivate language and grammar tools that will then be used in oral activities that will contribute to a better command of their legal course taught in English. |
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
| This course is taught in class only, at the rate of 10 sessions of 90 minutes. |
Recommended or required readings :
| Course notes and material will be handed out in class on a weekly basis. They will then be published online regularly. |
Assessment methods and criteria :
| There will be no examination for this course as our main objective is to help students improve their command of English in order to successfully complete their legal course taught in English.
However, students are asked to sign up for this module before the first class and to fulfil their commitment through regular attendance. The President of the student's academic review board will be notified of every student who has signed up and who will not have attended at least 75% of the modules taught. |
Organizational remarks :
| An information session is scheduled for September 21st 2011 at 1 p.m. (in room Tocqueville, B31).
Students who have chosen a legal course taught in English will have to take the level test that will be available on the eCampus platform from September 22nd to September 30th.
Following this, we will advise students whose level is below standard to attend the module. If students whose results are not good enough do not want to participate in the class, they are required to motivate their decision in an email that should be sent to Mr K. Heyeres by October 5th 2011.
Students who passed the test are welcome to join the class subject to room and place constraints. They will be allowed to sign up online until October 7th.
First class is scheduled for the week of October 10th. |
