Lecturer :  Emma Desforges
Language(s) of instruction :
English language
Course contents :
Listening activities based on texts and articles dealing with sociology. Students will be required to participate actively in the course, which implies that attendance in class is essential.
Learning outcomes of the course :
As this is a B2/C1 level course I would expect students to be able to do the following by the end of the term:
  • understand extended speech and lectures even when it is not clearly structured and when relationships are only implied and not signaled explicitly.
  • follow complex lines of argument provided the subject is relatively familiar.
  • take clear, structured notes based on an oral presentation.
  • summarize both orally and in writing the main ideas they heard in a listening exercise.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
The level of this course corresponds to the European levels B2/C1. Students will thus need to have a good basic knowledge of English and a thorough knowledge of the vocabulary and grammar studied in the first-, second- and third-year courses in the bachelor's degree.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
The main objective of this course is to help students to improve their listening and note-taking skills. This will involve using a variety of recorded materials, including authentic interviews, recordings of classroom lectures, documentaries and other audio material. Students will demonstrate their understanding of the material through written exercises and discussions. So, the course will also offer students an opportunity to explain what they have understood to others.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Weekly 2-hour class in a language laboratory from February to May 2012.
Recommended or required readings :
Any messages or documents relating to this course will be posted on "les nouvelles" or "les fichiers" on myUlg after the introductory class.
Assessment methods and criteria :
1. Continuous assessment : (6/20) This will be based on: > a note-taking exercise >some of the listening comprehensions done in class. .
2. Listening Comprehension exam :(14/20)
Listening comprehension exercises based on at least one unheard script.
N.B. The marks obtained for work done during the year count for the second session if they are 10/20 or higher.
