Course contents :  
This course is about social entrepreneurship and management of social enterprises. Social enterprises are private organisations pursuing social aims : nonprofit organisations, co-operatives, NGOs, mutuals, foundations. Those organisations are active in social services, culture and arts, health, local development, fair trade, alternative finance.

The course is structured in two parts. The fist part describes the social economy and analyses its "raisons d'être". The second part has a more practical character. It presents the various components of a social business plan (marketing, financing, HR management, governance).
Learning outcomes of the course :  
The course seeks

  • to present a new way to think about social challenges faced by our society,
  • to improve the knowledge of the social economy and
  • to highlight the specificity of management in social enterprises.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
The practical work is integrated in the lecture sessions.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :  
The course will take place in november and december 2011 (tuesday 13-15, thrusday 13-15).
Recommended or required readings :  
  • Mertens, S. (2010), La gestion des entreprises sociales, Edipro, Liège.
  • A Social Business Plan Model will also be given for the second part of the course.
Assessment methods and criteria :  
The students will be evaluated on the basis of a written examination and on their social business plan. It consists in a 20 pages project, written by two students.
