Course contents :  
Methodology of geographical approach (soil identification and use) based on cartographic and photographic illustrations. Guidelines for profile description and implementation (handbook and form of the Laboratory). Concepts of representative samplings and of adapted soil analysis menus. Principles of an interpretation both geomorphopedological (explicative) and agropedological or environmental (statement). Framework for soil evaluation and decision making as regards land use, crop/tree choice and personalized advice. Field demonstration in Condroz (walk through a reallocated site, contact with farmers, visit of new fittings, agro-environmental questions - one day) as well as in the Loamy region (2 x 1/2 day - including a soil profile description) illustrating the Belgian soil map.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
To give the means of a practical pedology making optimal use of existing information where present or being able to provide any missing data and establish the framework of a soil reference system for projects.
After completing the course the student is expected to
- read and interpret the soil map of Belgium,
- initiate a soil survey and perform a soil description,
- conceive a strategy of soil sampling and soil analyses,
- evaluate (top)soil suitability and fertility,
- set up the bases of a monitoring at field level,
- discuss land use and improvement options including fertilization.
