| ENVT0020-1 | Environment and health

| Duration : | 18h Th, 18h Pr |
| Number of credits : |
| Lecturer : | Laurence Counet, Jacques Nicolas |
| Coordinator : | Jacques Nicolas |
Language(s) of instruction :
| French language |
Course contents :
| The course contains two parts.
- Health:
o Introduction : health determinants, health measurement, environment measurement, concept of epidemiology
o Environment and et cardiovascular diseases
o Environment and cancers
o Environment and respiratory diseases
o Environment and fertility problems
o Institutional and organisational framework, Belgian and European levels
o Future prospects
- Pollution indoor:
o types of indoor pollutions (combustion, solvents, biocides, moulds, radon, ...)
o diagnosis and remediation methods
o health impact
o application to wood material case. |
Learning outcomes of the course :
| Approaching the links between pollutions and human health by examining different pathologies and different potential pollutions. The stress is laid on air pollution inside dwellings.
For the "health" part, each course tackles one or two types of pathologies, related to environment. For each pathology type, the following notions are introduced.
- notions of physiopathology required to understand the interaction mechanisms between environment and considered health problem
- main incriminated pollutants and possible exposition thresholds
- current knowledge on the relation between environment and health problem
- interaction mechanisms between environment and health problem
- future prospects for research
For the "indoor" part each pollution type is considered with practical examples and the way to establish a diagnosis.
At the end of the course, the student will be able to understand the basic points of a pollution diagnosis and to be sufficiently aware to discuss with a professional of medicine. He will particularly be aware of measurement interpretation in the frame of environmental legislation. |
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
| Elementary notions of environment |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
| For the "health" part, in order to illustrate and to complete the theoretical course, two exercises are proposed :
1. Sketch of a research protocol concerning the relationship between a pollutant and a health problem (definition of the research question, choice of methodology, set up of research tools, ...).
This exercise will allow the student to ponder on certain methodological aspects, such as study type, exposition indicators, health indicators and confusion factors.
2. Critical reading of a scientific paper and presentation of an abstract of the article to the group. This exercise will allow illustrating the matter of the course and highlighting the interest and the limits of the studies carried on in the domain of the relation environment/health.
For the "indorr" part, a practical workshop of a half-day, consisting in instrument handling, will be organised. |
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
| Face-to-face |
Recommended or required readings :
| Written notes available |
Assessment methods and criteria :
| For the "health" part, written exam at the end of the training program about the knowledge and the understanding of basic concepts.
For the "indoor" part, oral exams at the end of the training program about the understanding of basic concepts. |
Training(s) :
| No training other than practical exercises planned during the course |
Organizational remarks :
| Half-day modules (4hours) |
