Course contents :
There are two dimensions to this course - theory and practice. From a theoretical point of view, after having defined "culture" under the two views of "high culture" and "mass culture", we will study the relationship between culture and its "institutions", which are understood both in the sense of structures responding to a restricted set of criteria and as "symbolic fields" (in the sense given by Pierre Bourdieu). From a practical point of view, the course is divided into two sections covering a) the rise of modernity ; b) artistic institutions.
Learning outcomes of the course :
To introduce the problems of sociology of culture and to highlight, through concrete case studies, the dynamic relationships (but also objective constraints) which these encounter in terms of training and dissemination.
The course is widely illustrated by Powerpoint presentations.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Each lecture will be divided in two sessions : first a general topic, then a close analysis of some empirical data gathered by the students about local artistic institutions.
