CHIM9254-1  Practice chemistry of natural compounds

Duration :  4h Th, 44h Pr
Number of credits :
Master in Chemistry and Bio-industries, Professional Focus, 1st yearSecond semester4
Lecturer :  Aurore Richel
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Course contents :
The course is essentially centred on the thorough study of one or several natural products included in a relatively complex biological matrix.
For the realisation of the laboratory work, all the equipment of the General and Organic Chemistry laboratory is placed at the disposal of the students.
1. Preliminary work of the student:
1.1. Highly advanced bibliographical study.
1.2. Development of an experimental strategy to identify the natural products
2. Lectures:
2.1. Training of the presentation of a research project.
2.2. Oral presentation of the project and discussions with the personnel of the unit.
3 Practical works:
3.1. Realisation of the project (identification of natural molecules) in the laboratory:
Use, in synergy, of various techniques of extraction, purification and identification.
The student will be able, in particular, to familiarise and personally use the following techniques: soxhlet, Lickens Nickerson, Clevenger, concentrating Kuderna Danish, thin layer chromatography and column chromatography, GC, GC-MS, HPLC-DAD, HPLC-ELSD, HPLC-fluo, LC-MS, ir spectrometry and UV.
3.2. Drafting of a synthetic report on the project and the results obtained.
Learning outcomes of the course :
How to use synergically the extraction, purification and identification (physical as well as chemical) techniques of organic molecules contained in complex biological matrixes.
After completing the course the student is expected to
- to present a research project
- to carry out the project at the laboratory
- to use, in synergistic manner, the techniques of extraction, purification and identification of organic compounds
- to identify organic molecules contained in complex biological matrices
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
-- CG101 - General chemistry
-- CG102 - Organic chemistry (first part)
-- CB101 - Biological molecules chemistry

-- CA201 - Applied organic chemistry
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Lectures : 4h
Practical Works : 44h
Recommended or required readings :
Papers in International Journals
Assessment methods and criteria :
