Course contents :

| The course presents modelling tools of a bioreactor using concepts of chemical engineering.
It presents first the modelling of fermentation kinetics based on the assumption of non structured models: latency and growth phase, stationary/maintenance and decay/death phases.
It then describes thermal sterilisation (decimal reduction time, Z variable) and its application in batch and continuous sterilisation equipments.
Finally, the course presents modelling tools of:
- a continuous fermenter : influence of the microbial process, washing phenomenon, influence of the state of mixing, recycling.
- a batch fermenter : influence of the microbial process, fed batch operation.

Learning outcomes of the course :

| At the end of the course, the students will be able to apply concepts of chemical engineering to bioreactor design.
They will be able to identify the impact of microbial activity on bioreactor performance.
They will be able to compare continuous, discontinuous and fed batch operating modes |

| Course "Génie chimique (étude des réacteurs)" ( CHIM0023-2 ) (or course with similar contents) should have been attended during previous years (or they should be attended the same year). |

Assessment methods and criteria :

| An oral exam is organized during the first session (June).
Students prepare answers on paper which they will then explain and develop orally. Evaluation relies essentially on the understanding of concepts and relationships between them rather on the capacity to make restitution. |
